The Columbus Citizens Foundation offers scholarships in memory of their ancestors, who came to America to build better lives for themselves and their families, and in the hope that future generations of Italian-Americans will honor those who came before them by upholding the values of love of country, love of family and a tireless work ethic.

Note: The Columbus Citizens Foundation has a unique program in its seventh year called the Adopt-A-Scholar Program. The program allows a donor to fund a scholarship in the name of a friend, family member or loved one and to designate a school or field of study to which the scholarship will be applied.

The following schools are beneficiaries of the Adopt-A-Scholar Program for freshman entering in the fall of 2008:

Brooklyn College
Harvard University
Hobart & William Smith College
Penn State University
Rutgers University
Wagner College

If you are interested in attending any of these schools, you may be eligible for a scholarship through our Adopt-A-Scholar Program.  But please note that scholarships to other schools are available through our general College Scholarship Program.

The Columbus Citizens Foundation’s College Scholarship Program was established in 1984 at the directive of past Foundation President John Loconsolo.  Recipients receive a four-year scholarship that helps underwrite the cost of their college tuition.  Our scholarships, while generous, provide assistance towards tuition but will not cover payment for all school costs.

The deadline for applications for the 2008-2009 academic year has now passed and applications are no longer being accepted.

Applications for the 2009-2010 academic year will be available on this website in late November 2008.

If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, please take a moment to learn about our requirements and the scholarship application process.

Eligibility: Students who are of Italian descent and who are from households where the total gross income does not exceed $30,000 per capita are eligible.

Students must also submit transcripts of their academic records and have a minimum grade average of 85% or a 3.0 GPA.  They must also demonstrate that they have performed community service activities.

Students must be a resident of one of the following states: NY, NJ, DE, DC, MD, PA, VT, RI, ME, MA, NH, CT

Process: Families of students interested in receiving a college scholarship must submit an application that contains detailed and confidential personal information.  The application is available for download, and it must be sent to the Private School Aid Service, an independent financial review company that will determine eligibility based on financial need.

The applications of families that qualify for financial aid are then sent to the Columbus Citizens Foundation.  A committee reviews and evaluates the applications and asks applicants and their families to visit the Foundation for a mandatory interview.

Approximately a month after all interviews have been held, the committee decides which applicants will be awarded scholarships.  Notification is made by mail.

Application: The application is available for download in .pdf format.  If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader on your computer, please download it from the Adobe website.
